About the College of Arts & Science

Established in 1908, the College of Arts & Science continues to be the largest and most dynamic college on the University of Saskatchewan's campus. As the oldest college at the U of S, our enrollment has witnessed exponential expansion from the 70 students who first attended classes in downtown Saskatoon’s Drinkle Building to the nearly 8,000 students we serve today. With more than 45 per cent of the total student population at the U of S, we are comprised of 22 departments, 4 affiliated programs and 15 interdisciplinary programs, all taught by more than 300 faculty members. Arts and Science provides approximately half of the undergraduate courses offered at the U of S, with 60 subject areas grouped into four program types: Humanities, Social Sciences, Science and Fine Arts.

Our college is unique in that it is one of only a few in Canada to combine arts and science course offerings within the same college. This integrated approach provides students with an invaluable, broad and in-depth perspective of the world that enhances one’s focus on individual disciplines.

Vision

The goal of the College of Arts and Science is to be recognized as the most innovative and imaginative centre for Arts and Science scholarship in Canada.

Mission

With its unique disciplinary breadth, the College of Arts and Science exists to stimulate creative and critical thought, foster the joy of discovery and nurture curiosity-driven research. Collectively, we strive to advance the individual, embrace diversity, enrich society, preserve culture, while creating a sustainable civil world and natural environment.

The Student Experience

An education in Arts & Science equips students with numerous skills and qualifications they require to be successful in the workplace. They will develop competencies in leadership, critical thinking, communications, problem solving, team building and project management. These wide-ranging and transferable skills help our students adapt to changing workplace dynamics, and our many hands-on learning experiences give students the upper hand in today’s ever-competitive job market. From internships at IBM or editing a literary magazine, to participating in politics through the Legislative Internship Program or summer research positions in a chemistry or physics lab, the College of Arts and Science is committed to ensuring opportunities exist for students to enhance their classroom experience.
