Give to the Department of History

At the University of Saskatchewan, our donors are able to direct their gifts to specific areas they wish to support.

These gifts are used to assist exceptional students by providing financial assistance for their education.

The Department of History is raising funds for a number of priority areas for student awards. Here is a description of our department’s current priority areas.

History Centennial Award

The new centennial award is presented to the top History honours or double-honours graduate at the graduation banquet, and was created to commemorate the Department of History’s centennial year in 2009.

Donations to the Department of History

General donations to the Department of History are used annually to support graduate students undertaking research travel, or to provide undergraduate book prizes and awards.

Kathleen R. McKenzie Scholarship

Awarded annually to the top History student entering the fourth year honours program, this scholarship was established in memory of Kathleen Rose McKenzie (B.A. '31), of Regina, with funds from her estate.

Charles W. Lightbody Memorial Scholarship

Awarded annually to the History student with the second highest academic ranking, entering the fourth year honours program, this scholarship was established through the estate of Dr. Charles Wayland Lightbody, a brilliant and inspiring teacher who was Associate Professor of History (1948-62).

Frank Underhill Memorial Scholarship

Awarded annually to the History student with the third highest academic ranking, entering the fourth year honours program, this scholarship was established by donors Hilda Neatby and Peter Bietenholz in memory of the late Frank Underhill. Professor Frank Underhill was known as a founder of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), a precursor of social democratic government in the province. He was Professor of History (1914-27) at the University of Saskatchewan.

Hilda Neatby Memorial Scholarship

Awarded annually to the top student entering a third year honours program, this scholarship is available to students in History, French, Humanities and the Fine Arts. The Neatby scholarship was established to keep alive the memory of Professor Hilda Neatby, a dedicated scholar and teacher, an incisive critic of educational methods, and an advocate of government support for the arts, humanities and social sciences in Canada. She was Professor of History (1934-68) and Head of Department of History (1958-68) at the University of Saskatchewan.

Dr. George Simpson Memorial Scholarship in History

This memorial scholarship is awarded annually to the applicant with the strongest academic achievement who is a graduate student entering the first year of study toward a Masters of Arts or Doctor of Philosophy in History at the University of Saskatchewan.

Dave De Brou Memorial Scholarship in History

The scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate student pursuing a Master of Arts majoring in History. To be eligible, the student must demonstrate financial need and possess strong academic standing. The De Brou scholarship was established by friends, family and colleagues in memory of Professor Dave De Brou, Department Head of History (2004-04) at the University of Saskatchewan.

Ivo Lambi Memorial Fund

The fund supports an annual award to a graduate student pursuing a Master of Arts or Doctor of Philosophy with a focus on European history. The Lambi fund was established by friends, family and colleagues in memory of Professor Ivo Lambi, who taught in the Department Head of History (1991-96) at the University of Saskatchewan.

Vivian Williams Morton and Arthur Silver Morton Memorial Travel Scholarship

Awarded annually to a fourth year undergraduate or graduate student studying History, Anthropology, Political Studies or Native Studies, the scholarship is designated for travel relating to research. The Morton scholarship was established with funds from the Saskatchewan Arts & Crafts Society, in memory of Professor Arthur Silver Morton, Professor of History and Provincial Archivist.

Terrance L. Cameron Award

Given annually to a graduate student in the Department of History to support research activities, the Cameron award was established by Marjorie Cameron (BA’70) in memory of her husband Terrance L. Cameron (BA’68, MA’72).
