International Studies Student Association
“Be the change you wish to see in the World.” (Mahatma Gandhi)
Who we are:
The ISSA acts as the official liaison between International Studies students and the International Studies Administrative Committee.
What we believe:
We believe that poverty, illiteracy, hunger, oppression, slavery, racism, homophobia, and environmental degradation are not jut issues that happen at a distance. Likewise, they are not just issues that affect “other people” – they affect everyone! The ISSA exists to bring awareness to these issues by engaging students and helping to recognize that they exist in both the local AND global context.
“Individually, we are one drop. Together we are an ocean.” (Ryunosuke Satoro)
Events organized by the ISSA:
In the past, the ISSA has undertaken a number of causes for both the campus community, as well as the local and global community, including hosting international academic speakers, organizing “meet and greet” events for Canadian and international students, holding benefit concerts in support of local and international charities and NGO’s, organizing awareness nights in support of social justice issues, and advocating for structural change within the IS department in support of student needs.
Announcement
The ISSA and the Global Connections Student Committee (GCSC) would like to invite you to their capstone event of the year, The “Carnival of Solidarity: A Celebration of Cultures and Social Justice,” which will be held on Friday March 2nd, 2012 at Louis’ bar on campus, beginning at 5:30pm, with an open party at 8:30pm.
This will be the final event of the University’s “Celebrating International Research and Development Month” in February. The Carnival will showcase the talent and diversity of Saskatoon’s cultural and social justice groups with an organization fair, an international dinner, live cultural performances, and an open party, featuring 'DESCALSO' a latin folk rock band from Regina. The Carnival will also be a fundraiser for “Iskwewuk Ewichiwitochik (Women Walking Together),” which is a local community organization that raises awareness and supports families of missing Aboriginal women.
Tickets are $15 for students and $25 for non-students for dinner and $5 for everyone after 8:30pm for the open-party. Tickets can be bought at ISSAC (Lower Place Riel Rm. 80, 1 Campus Drive).
