ABOUT GERMAN

Germany isthe second largest exporting nation in the world.
And German is the language most commonly used in Europe, and the 6th most commonly spoken language in the world, after Chinese, English, Spanish, Russian and Hindi. Here's more information to help answer the question: Why study German? (Pourquoi apprendre l'allemand?)

Should you study German at the U of S?
Definitely. The U of S German program, with a solid foundation of courses, provides rewarding learning opportunities, and, as a smaller program, offers students a high degree of personal contact with dedicated faculty. At the same time, the study- and work-abroad opportunities available to U of S students of German match and even surpass those of larger language departments at other institutions. All that, plus a wide range of extracurricular activities such as the German club, conversation groups, and weekend language retreats, makes ours a materially enhanced language program.

Should you begin/continue language study after high school?
Absolutely. You are facing a shrinking global village reliant on the Internet and on international commerce. There are now more Internet users world-wide whose first language isn't English, and that trend is accelerating. 80% of Internet content is still in English, but within a few years, it's predicted to be less that 50%. Meanwhile, the European community, with a long tradition of recognizing linguistic competence as a key to success, has become the largest market on Earth.
