UKRAINIAN

Ukrainian is an important part of Canadian and Saskatchewan heritage. Canada has the world's third-largest Ukrainian population after Ukraine and Russia. The first immigrants from Ukraine settled in Saskatchewan in the 1890s. Ukrainian is spoken as a mother tongue by over 16 thousand people in Saskatchewan (1.7% of the total population), which makes it the fourth language of the province (after English, German and Cree).

It is an exciting language to learn, and it opens doors to Ukrainian culture famous around the world for its dancing, folk singing, colorful national costumes, architecture, decorative arts and mouth watering cuisine.

Ukrainian language studies can be used towards satisfying the Language Requirement. They can also be used towards ‘the Recognition in Ukrainian’ as well as towards the following majors:

• Linguistics (up to 15 cu),
• Modern Languages (students are currently recommended to take Ukrainian courses only as their L2 requirement within the Modern Languages Major, since only first-year courses may be offered on a yearly basis)
