AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPSGRADUATE AWARD SEARCHBayda-Vyshnevetsky Kozaks' Prize in Ukrainian Studies Value: $200 Number: One Conditions: Awarded annually to the student who writes the best essay on any topic focusing on the Kozak Era of Ukraine's history. To be eligible, students must be taking courses in or related to Ukrainian studies. Donor: The Bayda-Vyshnevetsky Kozak Society in honour of the founder of the Ukrainian Kozak Knighthood, Prince Dmytro Bayda-Vyshnevetsky. Apply: Students should submit essay to the Department of Languages & Linguistics. Deadline: April 1. Walter N. and Frances Hnatiuk Scholarship Value: $200 Number: One Conditions: Offered annually to a student of Ukrainian descent who resides at Sheptytsky Institute and studies Ukrainian at the University of Saskatchewan. Selection will be based on financial need and academic achievement. To be eligible students must have completed one full Regular Session as outlined in the University Calendar. Deadline: September 1 Ludwig, Olga and Constance Kaye Ukrainian Orthodox Millennium Scholdarship Value: $800 Number: One Conditions: Awarded annually to a deserving student taking an undergraduate degree with a major in Ukrainian Studies. If no student qualifies in any year, the award will go to a student involved in Ukrainian cultural work during the summer holidays, or to a student who has completed a research project on a Ukrainian family that settled in Saskatchewan prior to World War I. Donor: The Kaye family Apply: Submit a comprehensive letter outlining the cultural work of the research project to the Department; include an official transcript. Deadline: April 1. Steven and Katherine Kirstiuk Bursary Value: $600 Number: One Conditions: Offered annually to a worthy and needy student registered in advanced courses in Ukrainian. Apply: On application form available from the Department of Languages & Linguistics. Submit to the Head of the Department. Deadline: April 1. Mohylianky Scholarship Value: $300 Number: One Conditions: Awarded annually to a student who has completed at least Ukrainian 215 and has registered in at least one senior Ukrainian course. Selection is based on academic achievement and participation in Ukrainian student organizations. In the event that there is no suitable candidate for any one year, the scholarship will be awarded in a subsequent year. Donor: The Mohylianky Society of Mohyla Institute Apply: No application required. Annie Palynchuk Scholarship Value: $225 (approx.) Number: One Conditions: Open to students who have an ancestor who was a resident of Ukraine and who are pursuing Ukrainian studies. Preference will be given to undergraduate students; if no undergraduate students are eligible, then graduate students will be considered. Selection will be made on the basis of academic achievement. Donor: Bequest from Annie Palynchuk. Apply: A letter of application including a confirmation of ancestry and official transcript, must be submitted to the Department of Languages & Linguistics. Deadline: April 1. Petryshyn Memorial Scholarship Value: Varies Number: One Conditions: Offered annually to a student of Ukrainian descent who resides at Sheptytsky Institute and studies Ukrainian a the University of Saskatchewan. Selection will be based on financial need and academic achievement. To be eligible students must have completed one full Regular Session as outlined in the University Calendar. Porayko Scholarship Value: $750 Number: One Conditions: Awarded annually to a student who has completed at least one year at the University, successfully completed at least one course in Ukrainian, and who has registered in at least one advanced course in Ukrainian. Donor: Stephan J. Porayko of Edmonton, Alberta. Apply: No application required. Professor and Mrs. J. Rudewsky Scholarship Value: $350 Number: One Conditions: Awarded annually to the student who shows the most promise in the area of Ukrainian studies. Donor: Established by Mrs. J Rudewsky. The late Professor Rudewsky taught at the University of Kharkiv in Ukraine. After his arrival in Canada in 1948, he was closely associated with university students through his work with the P. Mohyla Institute. Apply: No application required. Michael Sytnick Memorial Scholarship Value: $500 Number: One Conditions: Awarded annually to a student who has completed at least one year at the University with high academic achievement, who has successfully completed at least one course in Ukrainian, and who has registered in at least one advanced course in Ukrainian. In the event there is no suitable candidate for the award in any given year, the scholarship for that year may be awarded in a subsequent year. Donor: Mrs. Sytnick in memory of her husband, the late Michael Sytnick Apply: No application required. Ukrainian Canadian Congress SPC Ukrainian Studies Award Value: Five-volume set Encyclopedia of Ukraine (approximate value $750) Number: One Conditions: Open to students entering the third year of a Ukrainian Studies program in the College of Arts and Science. To be eligible students must enrol in at least one advanced Ukrainian course. Selection will be based on academic achievement Donor: Saskatchewan Provincial Council of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Apply: Submit a comprehensive letter of application, including official transcript, to the Head, Department of Languages & Linguistics. Deadline: October 15 Ukrainian Studies Scholarships Value: $1,500 Number: Several Conditions: Offered annually to students studying for an undergraduate degreee with a major in Ukrainian Studies. To be eligible candidates must have completed either of the following: 1) at least five full courses in a three-year Arts program in Ukrainian, East European, Soviet or Canadian studies (depending on whether Ukrainians or Ukrainians in Canada is the area of concentration); or 2) at least eight full courses in a four-year Arts or Education program. This scholarship is renewable. Donor: The Canadian Institute for Ukrainian Studies Apply: Enquiries should be directed to the Department of Languages & Linguistics. Leon Wowk Memorial University Undergraduate Award in Ukrainian Value: $200 Encyclopedia Set Number: One Conditions: Offered annually to a student who has successfully completed at least one full year of university studies in Saskatchewan, who is registered in at least one Ukrainian studies course, and who is enrolled in a full program of studies in any college of the University of Saskatchewan. Donor: The Saskatchewan Council of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Apply: On application form available from the Department of Languages & Linguistics. Deadline: October 1. Joseph Zlacky Scholarship Value: Total value of approximately $2,500 Number: One or two Conditions: Offered annually to one or two of the following: 1) a full-time graduate student to support research into Slovak communities in Saskatchewan or into people of Slovak ancestry in Saskatchewan; 2) a full-time graduate student conducting thesis research in the area of languages, literature, history, or ethnography of Eastern Europe; or 3) a graduate or undergraduate student registering in an academic program in East-European studies (e.g. a language immersion program) in another university in Canada or abroad for credit towards a University of Saskatchewan degree. Evaluation of graduate research projects will be based on the originality and creativity of the project. Donor: The late Mr. Joseph Zlacky, to provide financial support to graduate or undergraduate students.
