Throughout 2023, the University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Arts and Science helped tell the stories of exceptional students, alumni, faculty and staff: their successes, their goals and their work on campus and beyond.

10. USask concert will mix music and math

In September, USask quantum science researcher Dr. Steven Rayan (PhD) teamed up with a Canadian composer and local musicians for a bold experiment in conveying mathematical meaning through music.

The Department of Indigenous Studies marked a major milestone this fall and celebrated its ongoing impact on the academic world.

8. Meet the new dean of the USask College of Arts and Science

Dr. Brooke Milne (PhD) started in the summer as dean of the largest USask college. She shared her personal story and thoughts on the future of the College of Arts and Science.

7. Biology professor to receive USask Distinguished Teacher Award

Dr. Neil Chilton (PhD) has been lauded for his teaching abilities for two decades. This year, he was awarded the university’s top teaching prize.

6. Two USask students finalists for McCall MacBain Scholarships

In February, political studies student Julia Morelli and engineering physics student Minh Au were among 88 finalists from across Canada for prestigious McCall MacBain Scholarships. Both students went on to win the $100,000 scholarships.

After six years and an 11,000 km journey, Omozojie Paul Aigbogun officially marked the completion of his PhD in chemistry.

2. Two USask students earn Rhodes Scholarships

Biology student Rachel Andres and nursing student Taron Topham were named Rhodes Scholars in November. It was the first time in more than 30 years that USask has celebrated two recipients in the same year.

1. Arts and Science graduate makes USask history

At USask Spring Convocation 2023, Graeme Dyck—who graduated with degrees in both math and music—received the university’s top undergraduate awards in both the sciences and the fine arts. He was the first person in history to win both.
