FARLS Lecture/Performance Proposal

The lecture/performance presentation focuses on several aspects associated with the production of Glen Gillis’ 2nd CD release, SaxSpectrum II (MSR Classics label), a sequel to his 2009 CD SaxSpectrum: New Music for Alto and Soprano Saxophone (MSR Classics: MS 1328). Glen Gillis will demonstrate various performance techniques apropos to the saxophone and how uniquely suited it is to the many styles and cultures of music. The compositions featured on the CD were written for or by Glen Gillis—current and past resident composers from Saskatchewan. Some of the works include the traditional combination of saxophone and piano, while solo saxophone, saxophone and electronics, saxophone and trumpet, and saxophone and didgeridoo (Aboriginal Australian instrument) are also featured. In sharing his experiences surrounding the CD project Glen Gillis will discuss what it means to compose, to commission, and to collaborate with a host of supporting musicians. The CD was completed during a sabbatical from the University of Saskatchewan, and the recording sessions were held at EMAP in March, April, and May 2014.
