The Day Malthus Invented a Population Problem

On Oct .31, 2011 the United Nations declared that the world’s population reached 7 billion people. A little more than a century earlier, on June 7, 1798, Rev. Thomas Robert Malthus, anonymously, published An Essay on the Principles of Population. Since then, those alarmed by population increase have been described as Malthusians or, more recently, neo-Malthusians. But, what did Malthus argue? How did his work fit into the debates of the day? How was his work been used historically to promote various social and economic agendas? And what is his legacy? This talk will introduce us to ‘Papa’ Malthus – a Malthus we might feel we know but we may be surprised.

All are welcome
