Seminar 'The Movement, Market and Meeting Functions of Public Space in our City Centres' by Prof. Ryan Walker

Professor Ryan Walker, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Geography and Planning, will be presenting a seminar as part of the ENVS 990: Seminar in Environment and Sustainability on Friday, January 30, 2015 at 1:30 pm in room 144 Kirk Hall.

Abstract: I discuss the design of public space and programming of activities (e.g., arts, commerce, recreation, debate) for enhancing the movement, market and meeting dimensions of public life in our city centres. The design and programming of streets is my main focus, including aspects of movement (e.g., designing the right-of-way to accommodate transit, cycling, and pedestrian infrastructure alongside private automobiles), market (e.g., enhancing commercial opportunities on streets), and meeting (e.g., design of parklets and other amenity spaces that promote meeting and staying on streets). This is followed by a shorter discussion of public squares. Examples from across Canada are used, though the majority are from Saskatoon and Montreal, the two cities where I have directed most of my empirical attention during the last few years.

All are welcome to attend.
